Skills In Demand 482 Visa

Skills in Demand Visa

The Skills in Demand visa allows individuals with high-demand skills to be sponsored by employers in Australia. Also potentially creating a path to permanent residency in Australia.

The new Skills in Demand Visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker. Replacing the standard 482 Employer Sponsored Visa, this visa enables individuals with high-demand skills to be sponsored by Australian employers. Launched on December 7, 2024, the new visa also introduces wide range of occupations and reduces the work experience requirement to only 1 year minimum. The majority of eligible professions are found in the recently released Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL). It is a four-year temporary skilled worker visa that allows workers greater flexibility to change employers and provides clear pathways to permanent residency.

Benefits of the Skills in Demand Visa

The 2024 Skills in Demand Visa provides numerous benefits for those aiming to work in Australia, such as an extended stay, quick processing, improved job flexibility, and a clear path to permanent residency.

Specific occupations included in the Skills in Demand List have been available since December 3, 2024. The new list is for Core Skills Pathway called the Core Skill Occupations List (CSOL). Check complete occupation list here. Occupations for Essential Skills Pathway is yet to come out. But it is essentially all occupations skill level 1 or 2 of the Core Skills List.

What are your chances?

Because it is a sponsored visa, competition is very stiff and getting sponsored is the greatest challenge with this visa, due to the following reasons.

  1. Few companies are willing or able to sponsor overseas candidates. One of the main reasons is that candidates have been running away from the sponsor just a few month after arrival in Australia, so many companies are now reluctant. Many are now resorting to poaching from each other.
  2. Whilst sponsors are few, interested candidates are too many and the number keeps growing. Because many candidates are available, sponsors tend to hire only high quality candidates and the interview and selection processes are normally very rigorous. As such many candidates fall by the way side. Talking from experience, for example, a recruitment agency wants to hire 30 Heavy Duty Mechanics for their client. The initial number of CVs they will go through is over 1000. From that lot the agency shortlists 150 candidates for the first interview, meaning 850 candidates have already fallen by the wayside. The agency conducts the interview and from the 150, 60 candidates make it to the final interview with the client. 90 more have fallen aside. The client then interviews and they pick their 30 from the 60 and another 30 have failed to make it. This means only 30 skilled candidates have made it from a total number of 1000..
